What will my family learn at United Karate Academy LLC?

At United Karate Academy LLC our primary system of Martial Arts is American Tae Kwon Do. However, we have over the years created a
combative system which is an eclectic or hybrid of many elements of the Martial Arts. There is no one system that is universal for all situations.
Therefore, our MMA stylized system of Jiu-jitsu, Boxing, Kickboxing, Aikido, Judo and among other styles create a well rounded curriculum for
our students. We understand that a skill in one style may have advantages over a skill from another or that what may work for one student may
not work for another. There are advantages and disadvantages of each style. The Martial Arts as a whole comes from similar origins and
ideas. Besides physical differences between styles, the greatest differences are caused by political backgrounds and history of the nations
from which they came. The roots, or core of our style is Tae Kwon Do “The Way of The Hands and Feet” and Karate “Empty Hand”. Once a
student reaches an advanced rank and level of maturity they may begin weapons training for extending physical control beyond their body and
into a weapon. This training also enhances ones skill level for demonstrations and tournaments.

What are the primary training components?

1.        Exercise for physical health, stretching and conditioning
2.        Self-Defense or Combative Movements
3.        Stylistic or Artistic training
4.        Sport Martial Arts Training
5.        Non Combative and Passive
6.        Mental Elements of How to Think

What is Self-Defense or Combative Movements?

At United Karate Academy we place a strong emphasis on Self-Defense and Sport Martial Arts. Self-Defense is the top priority because this
training component is the most practical and may save a student’s life one day. We also spend a great deal of time teaching students how to
Spar (Sports Martial Arts Training). Learning martial arts skills and self-defense fundamentals is very important to students of all ages.

What is Stylistic or Artistic Training?

stylistic or Artistic training at United Karate Academy LLC is accomplished through teaching forms and traditional techniques. Traditional
training methods build a strong technical foundation and helps develop discipline as students practice and learn new skills.

What is Sport Martial Arts Training?

Sparring is when students put on protective equipment and practice their martial arts skills against each other. For most students Sparring is
the most exciting aspect of their training at United Karate Academy. Sparring is taught for tournaments for our Competition Team, in the Black
Belt Training and Advanced Black Belt Training classes.

W
hat Non Combative and Passive Techniques are taught?

Your family will learn much more than Martial Arts at United Karate Academy! Build Community Relationships/Service, Character Traits and
Life Skills as each develops and grows holistically while training at UKA.

How does UKA create Mental Elements of How to Think?

Self-Defense is not only about how to defend yourself but also how to think your way out of a dangerous situation and use your wit.

How long does it take to earn the first belt?

The first belt that the student will earn is a Gold Belt. The minimum number of classes a student must attend in order to earn a Gold Belt is
16 classes (2 months). When a student is ready to be evaluated for their Gold Belt an Instructor will notify your family. The student may be
evaluated at a Pre-Test, one on one evaluation or holistically during class and/or evaluated during a semester. Each individual progresses at
their own speed so setting time periods is somewhat impossible due to the varying needs of each student. However, on average students are
given an opportunity to test four time in a year. Therefore: gold, orange, purple, green (approximately 1 year), blue-brown (6 months-1year),
brown to BLACK (1-2 years) or longer. Students are not guaranteed a belt after taking an exam. In other words, tests are performance based.

What is a semester?
Semesters are broken down into four quarters or are seasonal throughout the year. January-March (Spring), April-June (Summer), July-
September (Fall), October-December (Winter).

How are students evaluated for Testing/Student Graduation?

Student Testing/Graduation is held at the end of each semester. During Testing/Graduation the Instructor team will be evaluating each
student to determine if they are ready to be awarded their belt. A student is eligible to attend Testing/Graduation if they have earned all the
required Rank Stripes on their belt. Each Belt has its’ own Test/Graduation requirements.

What is a Rank Stripe?

Each month the Instructor staff evaluates the progress of students by doing evaluations in clas. If a student is struggling with the curriculum
the Stripe Testing system allows Instructors to identify the challenge early and work with students to help them progress to an acceptable skill
level. Red and Blue stripes indicate safety skills like address, phone number and emergency contact information for safety.

Is there a fee for Test/Graduation?

Yes. We charge a nominal fee that covers the cost of a student’s new belt, custom certificate of rank, and costs associated with their
Test/Graduation Session. The current Testing/Graduation Fee can be found on the UKA Rate Card.

How do the Instructors determine if a student is ready to earn a new belt?

We have a broad cross section of students at UKA. We have some who are very athletic, those who are average, and those who are below
average. No matter how physically gifted a student is they will earn a new belt if they practice diligently and put forth their BEST EFFORT. This
concept is one of the most important lessons that we teach our students. Imagine how successful your child will be if they learn to do their best
in everything that they do!

Is there training progression?
As a student’s advance in rank they will move to more advanced training classes at the appropriate rank. Please see your Instructor or
Program Director for more details.

What is required for adult training?

Complete set of Sparring Gear (Head Gear, Hand Pads, Foot Pads, Mouthpiece, and Cup for Males) and Training Weapons as needed.
Adults do not have to begin sparring until Orange Belt, but may begin sparring as a White Belt.

What is a Black Belt?

A Black Belt is a symbol of high achievement in martial arts. A UKA Black Belt is a student who has demonstrated a high level of Character
and who has achieved their full potential in the techniques and skills required to earn a Black Belt.

How long does it take to earn a Black Belt?

The average time to earn a Black Belt is between 36 and 48 months of continuous training. It may take a student longer if they take time off
during their training or struggle with learning required curriculum elements.

Do students ever Compete at tournaments or is there Competition Team?

Yes! We have Competition Teams denoted by patches to indicate these individuals. Individuals who consistently compete typically place
very well. This elite team is open to any individual who wishes to compete. Please speak with your Instructor for more information about the
competition patches and uniforms.
